It seems like the common thread throughout this whole trip has been all the saints’ name days that we have celebrated. Today, however, is one of the biggest within the Greek culture. Among all the saints celebrated today, the most prominent is the Theotokos, or the Virgin Mary. For obvious reasons, it marks a significant religious holiday between Easter and Christmas and has people swarming the church for a piece of special bread. We went to St. Mary’s and followed the service with a feast like meal at my grandparent’s home complete with all the traditional Greek dishes (including lamb!). My uncle’s family joined my aunt’s and ours which made things a little close in quarters but made for a great meal and holiday with the majority of my family, a real rarity in itself. Of course, with little Maria celebrating as well, she loved the attention, sometimes.
Her faces were too priceless not to share!
